Hello there! I asked a question to witchcraftings about Angels and you had mentioned that you might be able to help. I have a lot of questions, as this is my first time working with any kind of Being besides my guide and I'm kind of freaking out a little. I guess the first thing I'd ask is if you could give me an introductory course on Angels? Thank you so much!

Hello dear!  Sorry it took me so long to respond to you.  I had seminar today.  So, angels.  The first thing you need to know is that there are nine different kinds, so to speak.  They are referred to as the Nine Choirs of Angels.

In the first Choir (or third, depending on which direction you’re viewing them from), you have your Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones.  These three are the most powerful.  (NB: Seraphim is plural of Seraph, and Cherubim is plural of Cherub.  There is no such thing as “a Seraphim” or “two Cherubims”.  “A Seraph” or “two Cherubim”, etc.)

At the top of the first Choir are the Seraphim.  They are the guardians before the Throne of God.  Seraphim have six wings, two which cover their faces, two which cover their feet, and two that are used for flying.  Because they stand around the Throne of God and are His guardians (or attendants), they praise Him constantly, saying, “Holy holy holy is the Lord of Hosts.”  (Once again, I am referencing Catholic Online to make sure I am remembering everything correctly.)

In the middle rank are the Cherubim.  These are not the tiny little babies with chubby cheeks and chubby butts flying around with roses.  Jews believe they are the intercessors of God, look like humans, and have two sets of wings.  They are “guardians of God’s glory.”  In the Catholic tradition, they continuously praise God and have “intimate knowledge of Him.”

At the bottom of these are the Thrones.  They are known as the angels of humility, peace, and submission.  According to Catholic Online (and as a practicing Catholic, this is the view I am presenting to you – for instance, the Muslim view of angels is different) they reside in the “area of the cosmos where material form begins to take shape.”  Also according to angel lore (though I’m not sure how much I believe this – really, it’s up for interpretation), the other angels in the lower choirs need the Thrones in order to access God.

Confused yet?  😄  Don’t worry.  It’ll get clearer, hopefully.  So.  Now we have our second Choir of Angels, the not-as-powerful-but-still-really-powerful-and-awesome-in-the-classical-use-of-the-word-awesome angels.

Starting at the top of this Choir are the Dominions.  These are the McGonagalls of the angelic realm, so to speak.  They are the Angels of Leadership, the Get-Stuff-Done Angels.  They regulate the duties of the other angels, and make certain that the commands of God are known.

Next come the Virtues.  If you couldn’t already tell by their names, they’re the angels in charge of miracles, grace, valor, and courage.  In addition to this, they also control the elements and are known as the “Spirits of Motion.”  Apparently, they control when the seasons shift, when the moon changes, the stars, and even the sun.  This then begs the question of whether or not they’re in control of science too, like Newton’s Law of Gravitational Force…(this is some of the stuff I think of when I have nothing else to do.  And for the record, if they’re in control of the sun, then I would put money on them controlling gravity too 😜).

At the bottom of the second Choir of Angels are the Powers.  These are not ones to shake a stick at though.  They are the Warrior Angels and defend the entire universe and everything in it against evil.

That concludes the second Choir of Angels.

For our third Choir, we have two of the most well-known angel orders here.  Frist up are the Archangels.

Everybody knows Archangels.  From Saint Michael the Archangel to the Archangel Gabriel (or Saint Gabriel if you prefer), to (Saint) Raphael and Uriel, they are some of the most familiar names and figures out there.  Even if someone doesn’t believe in angels or spirits or any of that at all, they’ve still heard of at least one of these figures (most likely Michael, followed by Gabriel).  Considering they’re the angel order that is mentioned the most frequently in the Bible, this is unsurprising.  At points, it can seem like everybody and their brother is an archangel (they’re not).  Catholic Online says the term “archangel” means “chief or leading angel”.  When taking a look at their Biblical roles, this is unsurprising.  They are the ones who have appeared as messenger to people in times of a crisis or at other critical points in history.  Take the Annunciation, for example.  That wasn’t just any angel showing up, that was the Archangel Gabriel.  In the Catholic Church, there is a feast day for the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael that is celebrated on the 29th of September.  Guess who regularly forgets about it.  (This person right here, writing this post.)  Curiously enough, Catholic Online also says that Archangels may be their own hierarchy of angels, but may also be made up of other hierarchies basically all mixed into one, as Michael the Archangel is really a Seraph.  I myself did not know this (see?  I’m learning too!  😜).  It just so happens that I have one of my angel books with me here at college.  I can do another Master Post about Archangels specifically at a later point for you.

So.  After that monster text about Archangels, we have our second-lowest order in our third Choir.  These are the Principalities.  The Principalities are interesting, as according to the New Testament, they were created “through Christ and for Him.”  You may choose not to believe this if you are not a Christian.  That’s totally fine.

Lastly, we have our Angels.  Good, normal, everyday Angels.  They are the ones who are closest to the human world, and consequently, to us.  Guardian angels also fall under this category, in case you were wondering.  I can do another post on that later, because this one is getting way too long already.  So.  Because of this, and the fact that they act as our protectors and intercessors, they have the ability to access all other angels at any point in time.  They are not restricted by realms or Choirs, or whatever.  So, for instance, if Saint Michael is up there having a chat with a Cherub friend (and I say this with the utmost respect), your guardian angel, or any angel for that matter, who needs to get him for you can simply pop up there angel-style and get him to come help.  Angels also deliver our prayers to God, and God’s answers to us, as well as carry other message to humans.  Angels are the most caring out of the Nine Choirs, as well as the most social and interactive with humans.  Although, Archangels are pretty close in the human realm too, since they act as the big guns protection-wise.

I hope this helped, my dear!  This was basically just a post describing the different orders of angels for you, so you could get a better feel of what you’ll be working with.  Up next will be posts about guardian angels and the Archangels themselves, and whatever else you have questions on.  This was fun!  Thanks for asking!

Blessings,

Laerwen

Oh wow. I felt like I should have been taking notes! =D

Thank you for all of that information and also taking the time to write it all down.  From what it sounds like, the Angel that approached me is probably one of the everyday Angels.

Though, I do have a question: You know how Deities can be associated with things? Like Artemis with the hunt or Athena with wisdom?  Can that be true with Angels?  For example, in the first interaction with this female Angel, I got a lot of imagery and feeling connected with the hunt, the North, the hunt of/in the north, bow and arrow, spear, stag, and boar.  I’m sure it’s impossible to know every Angel, but are there any that pop out at you?

Thank you again for taking the time to help me.

Hmmm.  Yes, I completely understand what you mean.  I occasionally work with other deities myself, so I am familiar with their attributes.  As for angels, just regular lowest order angels, I don’t know if they have specific attributes like this.  What you described sounds like Artemis, right off the top of my head.  However, there is an archangel that also functions in a similar manner.  I’ll be writing about her in my Archangels master post next, so stay tuned for that.  In the meantime, are there any other questions you have for me?  Feel absolutely free to message me about anything and I’ll do my best!  😤

When I first encountered her I thought she might have been Artemis, too, but upon asking my guide during a recent meditation if it was a deity, he said no. He was so happy and proud that I’d been chosen by this Angel that he could barely contain himself.

Is there a certain way to approach them? Some etiquette or mannerisms I need to be aware of (besides being super respectful and nice)? She said she’s willing to wait until I’ve done my research and am more comfortable with Angels in general.

If you want, I can describe what she looks like.

Also, if you have any recommended readings that would be great, too.

I can’t thank you enough for helping me out!

Absolutely!  As for approaching angels, the first thing you need to know is that they are nondenominational, meaning they will help anyone anywhere, regardless of faith (or lack of it).  The only thing they need in order to help you is your request.  Unless it’s a life-or-death situation, they cannot intervene due to our gift of Free Will.  So, while they can contact people (obviously), you also need to invite them and let them know that you wish to work with them (this is not the same as giving control to them, and an angel would never take control of you or your life anyway, as they cannot comprehend anything other than the most pure of emotions or motivations.  If an “angel” does this, they are not a true angel).

When I speak with my angels, I am respectful but I also don’t beat around the bush.   I’m very honest and frank with them, especially if I am unburdening or talking about my feelings.  Sometimes I actually get overwhelmed by the pure love I feel coming from them.  It’s very humbling.  I recommend being respectful, certainly, but also be yourself when you converse with your angel.

As for reading, Doreen Virtue’s books are a great place to start.  Definitely take a look at what she has to offer!

You’re certainly welcome, by the way.  Always glad to be of assistance!

See, now, that’s interesting.  You mentioned that they don’t come to you unless you usually contact them first, making your intent known that you want to work with them.  I never knowingly send out a request because Angels were never in my personal belief system (though it is a relief to know that they are nondenominational).

I do like what they stand for, though (
protection, guidance, etc.), and I like their imagery.  For Christmas a couple of years ago, my mom gave me a snow globe with an angel in it, and I’ve got a small statue and a small angel figure hanging on my wall from my grandma.  Would this be enough to invite one of them to me?

I know of two times where I spoke with this Angel, and possibly two other times earlier this year where she might have been present.

I’ve seen Doreen Virtue’s name among the tumblr-sphere a lot within the past week or so.  I think I’ll take a look at what she has to say.

"Usually" is the key word here.  If it’s a matter of directly intervening in some area of your life, that is where they are restricted, since that would violate your Free Will unless it was life-or-death (car accident, etc.  Those sorts of things).  In terms of simply contacting to speak or to make themselves known to us, that’s fine.  But the request for direct intervention has to come from you.  They can certainly give us aid in the form of emotional comfort, but it is restricted to things like that — the indirect help — until we send out a prayer (‘I hope I do well on this exam’ as opposed to ‘Angels please help me with this exam’.  That sort of thing).  That’s the sort of situation I meant when it comes to asking for their involvement.

Otherwise, angels come and go around you all the time.  Every person, whether they believe in them or not, has a guardian angel, usually two.  Sometimes there are more.  These are the angels that are assigned to be with you from the beginning of your life to the moment of your death, and then they help you transition over afterward.  Guardian angels are generally of the lowest order of angels, also.  But the archangels are very involved here as well, don’t forget.  Archangels can come and go around you regularly as well.  And if you ask them to stay with you permanently, then they will.  Just like all other angels, they are not hampered by time or space, and can be anywhere they need to be, at any given point in time.

I have to admit, when it comes to speaking with my angels, I am not always the most vocal.  usually I direct my thoughts and prayers to God, though I will talk with my guardian angels and some archangels with whom I am close as well.

Definitely give Doreen Virtue a look.  One of the things that’s so great about her books is that she teaches you how to communicate safely.  There is no room for any of the darker spirits or beings to come through when she talks you through contacting them and learning how to open up your spiritual channels of communication, because there is simply no opportunity for them to come through.  Her focus is solely on love and positivity, which is what those beings are not and everything the angels are, and she teaches you how to effectively protect yourself from negative energy and negativity as well.  The information I will be posting about archangels later on will be coming from one of her books (not word for word, obviously).

{ this is a skill i’ve been using a lot lately, thought i’d share :) }

{  Distress Tolerance Skill: Coloring Mandalas

PRE-PREP

1}   go to www.printmandala.com and print a couple of mandalas that you like. (you can also find some on google images.)
2}   buy set of colored pencils or markers if you don’t have them. more colors = better
3}   buy a clipboard if you wanna lie in bed and color.
4}   set these aside and ready to go so they are easily accessible when you are distressed

HOW TO USE DURING DISTRESS

1}   choose a mandala from your pre-printed stash
2}   set a timer (phone is good) for 30 minutes
3}   color it with ur markers or pencils. i prefer pencils.
4}   optional: play an audiobook or music while coloring. make sure it’s not sad music.
5}   when timer goes off, stop coloring. ask yourself, what level is my distress right now? if still high, set timer for another 30 minutes and keep coloring. if tolerable, stop coloring and do thing you want to do.
6}   repeat as needed until distress is tolerable

WHY IT WORKS

coloring patterns is distracting enough to pull your attention away from negative thoughts/emotions, but mandalas are also repetitive so you can kind of “zone out” while coloring. it feels good being able to create something and you feel a sense of competency or confidence. there’s no competitive aspect to it so you can just do the activity without having to worry about doing it perfect or right or better than anyone else. it can remind you of a simpler time when all that was expected of you was coloring. :) it is easy and almost everyone can do it.

TIPS

    — stick to the timer. even though you want to keep coloring when it goes off, stop once you finish the segment you’re on and put the pencil down. tell yourself you can come back and finish it after you do the thing you’re putting off.

    — you can do this activity without using a timer, especially if you don’t have anything planned for the rest of the day and aren’t using this to distract from a task :))

    — practice coloring during times when you’re not distressed, so that when you need to use this skill it will be easier and more “automatic”. i can’t stress this enough. even though coloring is really simple, it’s much better for the activity to feel familiar so that you can easily use it during distress. so if you can practice it during normal times it’ll help u. think of it as homework if you have to — you are building up a memory muscle.

    — if you feel guilty because you’re “wasting time” doing a “childish activity”, remind urself that ur doing this for your mental health, that this is an established skill recommended by top psychotherapists, and that calming down your distress so you can actually *do* the stuff you’re worried about (rather than procrastinating all day about the thing and not actually doing it) is the opposite of wasting time. remember that practicing this skill even when you’re not distressed is HOMEWORK, not optional time wasting thing. also, taking care of ur mental health is not a frivolous activity. it’s very important and crucial to a happy successful life.

I’d like to add that coloring inside the lines neatly and skillfully is something that impresses the fuck out of most artists. Yes, even professional working artists. I have seen artists genuinely lose their shit with admiration when someone could color inside all the lines (sometimes that artist is me). SO if you’re coloring and thinking ‘this is dumb i’m not an artist i bet an artist would laugh at me’ be assured most artists would actually be hooting enviously at you and then asking to borrow your crayons.

This is so cool.
